Male pattern balding and women pattern balding can now be effectively treated by hair transplant. This revolutionary surgery had made it possible for men and women to regain their lost hair.
What Is Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant is a surgical technique that involves removing hair follicles from a certain part of the body called the ‘donor site’. It is transplanted to a bald part of the body which is called the ‘recipient site’. More common to treat male pattern baldness, hair transplant procedure can be divided into two main types.
Types Of Hair Transplant
FUT-Follicular Unit transplantation:
In this procedure, the patient’s hair is transplanted from naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs. They are called follicular units. These also contain sebaceous glands, small muscles, nerves, and occasional fine vellus hairs. These small units can be safely transplanted in thousands which increases the cosmetic impact of the technique. FUT involves removing the hair is removed in a single, thin strip and then dissected into in individual follicular units using microscopes.
FUT is an advanced technique in hair transplantation. It helps to produce a more natural look, unlike older techniques that used larger grafts for transplantation. The success rates of this procedure are very high. The results match the way hair grows naturally and it’s difficult to detect the procedure as cosmetically done. Most FUT patients are left with large scars on their heads. Scarring being the main issue with FUT, many people approach FUE for their hair transplant. But, undoubtedly the quality of hair transplant is much better in FUT when compared with FUE. Patients are unlikely to face further problems with their hair after undergoing a FUT transplant.
Sedatives are given before the procedure to relax the patient. The length of the hair depends on the number of follicular unit grafts to be transplanted. The session takes half a day for up to 800 grafts and takes about a full day for more than 2,400 grafts.
FUE-Follicular Unit Extraction:
This is a minimal invasion procedure in which individual follicular units are removed from the donor site of the patient and directly replanted into the balding areas of the scalp. This procedure differs from FUT or strips harvesting because, in FUT, a strip is removed from the donor site and dissected into many individual follicular units. The hair follicles are removed randomly in this method.
The donor area gets less density due to this but that is not even noticeable. Since the follicles are removed one at a time, one session can have only a few follicles harvested. FUE works better when hair restoration has to be done in smaller sessions. This method has quicker recovery time and less post-operative discomfort as compared to FUT because there are no stitches required and no linear scar left to heal. It is also beneficial when the scalp appears too tight for removing strips and this procedure also enables to implant of more beautiful hair from the nape of the neck for the hairline or eyebrows.
It’s best to take a professional opinion on the type of surgery best suitable for you.
