Well, it’s bittersweet for me to updo curly hair. I want to point out that there are many kinds of different naturally curly hair with some looking better than the other ones. I am fortunate enough to have at least a decent sort of natural curliness, with more of a wavy look. Most people would think I permed my hair in some way instead of assuming that’s just how my hair is like nature, which I think is a good thing. However, there are some downsides to my hair that have been bothering me for years.
Basic Facts To Updo Curly Hair
1. My hair curls way too much when the weather is wet or when I sweat, so if it rains, I look a lot different from other people.
2. It will never go the way I want it to unless I put on some particular hair product, so if I have a terrible morning hair, water will not work. Trust me, I have tried and failed too many times. In the end, I gave up. I tie my hair up if that happens now, which is the only solution.
3. It can quickly produce an overall messy look if I don’t take special care of my hair, and it’s close to impossible for my hair to be silky smooth. Because there will always be some hair “sticking out”.
4. I grew up in China and went to Chinese public schools, and one of the many strict campus rules was that students could not have permed hair. Because my hair looked so curly and there usually weren’t many Chinese people with naturally curly hair in general, multiple teachers thought I permed my hair. I had to explain how my hair was naturally like this. It was terrifying to stop a teacher I didn’t know on my way to the bathroom and be “investigated” about my hair as a kid.
But all in all, I like my hair a lot. Also, I wouldn’t want to change its shape in the future.
Why Do Chinese People Don’t Have Curls?
The reason is authentic Chinese will only have straight hair. ‘True’ is in those who came from the Urheimat of Sinotibetans. The original Han Chinese belongs to up in the Tibetan plateau. Straight hair is a genetic adaptation to cold climate n for an individual to survive in such conditions over tens of thousands of years, he/she would possess straight hair via natural selection.
Curly hair, on the other hand, is an adaptation to warm n humid climate.
If you have curly hair as a Han Chinese, you probably have some significant admixture from Austronesians somewhere down your ancestry. Even though both your parents might officially be “Chinese’, being substantial enough for your curly hair genetic alleles to become dominant over your straight ones.
